Living a life of service: how two people are helping feed thousand others
South Africa has many challenges but if there’s one thing that defines our spirit as a nation, it’s Ubuntu. Our quintessential love of each other is what gets us through the toughest of times. Giving back to communities is part of our mission as GIFS and we found the ideal vehicle when it comes to providing food relief in the form of Food for Life SA. It’s a non-profit organisation with more than 20 branches. The mission is to alleviate hunger by serving freshly prepared, plant-based meals with love.
Food for Life SA is part of a global movement that is the world’s largest vegetarian food relief programme. In Sandton, Food for Life SA is run by Angie and Rakesh Rambaran. They currently feed 6 600 people a month, and they use their own premises to prepare the food and plan the distribution to different areas.
It all started in 2015 when they were both 50-years old. They moved to Johannesburg and were devastated at the levels of poverty being experienced by people, with so many unable to get a decent meal. Since that fateful day when Angie decided something had to be done and signed up for the Food for Life initiative, some 549 600 meals have been prepared up until the end of May 2024.
Angie and Rakesh are an example of love in action, and what happens when two people are determined to help. We were proud to be part of their last food drive in May 2024 and can’t wait to sign-up to help again.
