President Kgalema Motlanthe shares the story of ‘his two hearts’

One of GIFS’ most memorable occasions was a recent dinner event hosted in honour of former President Kgalema Motlanthe as we closed off our Future of Education: A 5-Day Global Exchange. The former president delivered a rousing keynote address at the event in Johannesburg in May 2025 that was attended by both international and national high-profile delegates from the world of business and politics.

Speaking about the brutality of apartheid, Mr Motlanthe shared that the reason he survived was because he lived with two hearts; one that endured suffering and the other that kept beating with hope. This duality was a common theme throughout the evening as speakers acknowledged the need for ethical and servant leadership across the globe.

Ms Namhla Mniki, who’s from the private office of our president, delivered a message of support for The Global Goals 2030:  Africa Scholarship, before the address by President Motlanthe.

The most fitting summation of the event, as well as the week-long Future of Education, is this excerpt from Mr William C. McCormick, Jr, the President of Florida Memorial University, “This visit changed me. It changed how I see South Africa. It changed how I think about resilience, purpose, and our global responsibility to stand in solidarity with those committed to justice and education. I return to Florida Memorial University with renewed inspiration to lead, to serve, and to deepen partnerships that not only cross oceans but unites hearts.”
